What is the sales tax rate when purchasing a vehicle in Georgia?

Georgia technically does not charge sales tax on the purchase of new and used vehicles. Hold your excitement, however, because the state does charge something called a Title Ad Valorem tax at a rate of 7%. This one-time fee is based on the value of the car, not the sales price. Thus, buyers will have to pay 7% of the fair market value of the vehicle they’re purchasing in most Georgia counties.

Georgia Title Fees

The fee for an original title application in Georgia is $18.00. If a vehicle requires titling, buyers have 30 days from the vehicle purchase date to apply for the title at their local County Tag Office. If one fails to apply for a title within 30 days of the vehicle purchase or transfer date, an additional $10 fee will be added.

The fee for a change of ownership or to add/delete a Lien/Security interest to/from the title is also $18.00. In such a case, the original title must be provided.
